Larry Charles hasn’t taken it easy during Hollywood’s prolonged labor stoppage. The comedy icon, who just released his latest directorial effort (Dicks: The Musical), tells The Hollywood Reporter that he also just put the finishing touches on a memoir.
Simon & Schuster recently purchased the book, with plans for a summer 2025 release. A description from the publisher describes it as “a memoir from one of the major influences on modern comedy (and Emmy, Golden Globe, and Peabody Award-winner), detailing his lifelong relationship with the craft, his work on iconic projects such as Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Borat, as well as highlighting collaborations with everyone from Mel Brooks to Bob Dylan to Bill Maher to Megan Thee Stallion and Bowen Yang.”

Though currently untitled, Charles shared one idea during a recent wide-ranging interview: Life is But a Joke, from the Bob Dylan song “All Along the Watchtower.” (Dylan is another collaborator of Charles’, co-writing Charles’ 2023 movie Masked and Anonymous.)
After a stint joke-writing in 1970s Los Angeles, Charles quickly made a name for himself in the comedy world — first teaming with Larry David on sketch comedy series Fridays before going on to write for Seinfeld and direct Curb Your Enthusiasm. Directing proved to be a smart pivot, as he famously helmed Sacha Baron Cohen films Borat and Brüno. A24’s Dicks: The Musical is currently in theaters.
This is not Charles’ first book. In 1988, he and the late Richard Belzer teamed up for the comical self-help guide How to Be a Stand-Up Comic.
